Nwanyị oma “Beautiful Woman,” is an ode to Nigerian womanhood, dark skin, tall frames, and the kind of beauty that doesn't always get celebrated. It's also an ode to me. After years of self-hatred, this series is the place where I am reminded to love myself unapologetically.
Adamma means "beautiful first daughter," was me figuring out my point of view. She's the first drawing in this series of four. Semicircles in the top and in the hair, with bright colors that reflect my love of color and the playfulness I bring to my personal style. Starting a series is always a little uncertain.

Nneka means "mother is supreme." I went with circles in the top and in the hair. I chose a darker skin tone and a different hairstyle for this one. I wanted to create an image of a woman who feels distinct from the rest, someone who reads as more motherly. There's a strength to her that I didn't plan, but I recognized it when she was done.

Chigozie means "God's blessings." Triangles aren't a shape I draw as often as semicircles or circles, so I challenged myself to use them here, in the top and in the head wrap. I also wanted this drawing to speak to the range of skin tones that black women have. This one pushed me the most technically because of the shape I chose, but it also helped me improve my skills and trust my instinct.
